It has never been so easy, and so competitive, to start a company in France. Volumes are at a record high, and a few sectors concentrate most of the value.

France recorded about 1.11 million company creations in 2024 (an all-time high according to INSEE), nearly two thirds of them micro-entrepreneurs. The barrier to entry has never been lower, but standing out has never been harder.

5.2Promising sectors
- Artificial intelligence: the top sector for funding, in the world and in France.

- Healthtech, fintech, deeptech, quantum: deep markets, often backed by research.
5.3French success stories
Mistral AI raised €1.7bn in 2025 (valuation ~€11.7bn), becoming the first French decacorn. Other champions: Doctolib (health), Qonto (business banking), Back Market (refurbished goods), Alan (insurance), Contentsquare (analytics), Pennylane (accounting), Ledger, Dataiku. France has around thirty unicorns.
5.4Social science and policy profiles
You can be an entrepreneur without being an engineer: one founder in two brings the market, product, sales, regulation or operations side. Social science profiles excel in legaltech, govtech, impact, education, marketplaces and any sector where understanding institutions and uses makes the difference.
Key takeaway
The market is huge but crowded. The advantage does not come from the idea (there are plenty of them), but from execution, an in-depth knowledge of a problem and a sector, and the ability to build a strong team.
